Resumen
El artículo presenta los resultados del Análisis del Discurso Multimodal de un corpus de seis libros álbum chilenos, género narrativo multimodal que requiere una lectura capaz de involucrar el modo de la imagen para acceder al significado global del texto. Desde la perspectiva de la Lingüística Sistémica Funcional (Halliday, 2014) y la Semiótica Social (van Leeuwen, 2005; Kress y van Leeuwen, 2006; Painter, Martin y Unsworth, 2013), se indaga en la constitución del signo multimodal como una entidad material, en la cual confluyen los distintos modos semióticos para la conformación del significado, por medio del estudio de los ensambles o couplings multimodales. Este tema es relevante, si lo que se busca es comprender el espacio semántico que se materializa en estos textos, así como detectar las habilidades de lectura que requieren, propias de sociedad contemporánea. Los resultados muestran que las experiencias narradas verbalmente se ven atenuadas por los significados visuales, que alejan los textos del realismo y aminoran los posicionamientos categóricos que, en ocasiones, se presentan en el modo verbal escrito. Asimismo, se observan significados multimodales que instancian cercanía y distancia social simultáneamente, observados a partir del comportamiento social de los personajes. La organización composicional, por su parte, demuestra que el signo multimodal materializa un espacio privilegiado para comprender cómo se realiza el proceso de semiosis por medio de los ensambles multimodales.

Abstract
This article presents the results of a Multimodal Discourse Analysis performed in a corpus consisting of six Chilean picture books. They are part of a multimodal narrative genre where the verbal code does not provide access to a comprehensive meaning of the text by itself, because the mode of the image is also required. Following the perspective of the Systemic Functional Linguistics (Halliday, 2014; Martin and White, 2005; Martin and Rose, 2007) and the Social Semiotics (van Leeuwen, 2005; Kress and van Leeuwen, 2006; Painter, Martin and Unsworth, 2013), the formation of the multimodal sign as a material entity is studied, in which different semiotic modes converge to conform the meaning through the study of multimodal couplings. Results show that the verbally narrated experiences are mitigated by the visual meanings that distance the texts from realism and reduce the categorical positioning that, occasionally, appear in the verbal written mode. Additionally, multimodal meanings that instantiate social closeness and distance simultaneously, observed from the social behavior of the characters are analyzed. The compositional organization in the layout, on its hand, demonstrates that the multimodal sign materializes a privileged space to understand how the process of the semiosis is realized through multimodal couplings.
