Análisis macroestructural semántico del discurso de la prensa latinoamericana digital sobre los ataques del 11 de septiembre

Microstructural semantic analysis of the digital discourse of the Latin-American press on the September 11th attacks

Resumen

Este artículo analiza la exclusión e inclusión de acontecimientos y actores sociales en la representación de los sucesos del 11 de septiembre en Nueva York en la prensa digital latinoamericana. Se utiliza el análisis crítico del discurso siguiendo los principios establecidos por van Dijk (1990, 1997, 1998). La muestra está conformada por 509 noticias seleccionadas de la cobertura noticiosa de diecisiete periódicos digitales latinoamericanos, desde el 12 hasta el 16 de septiembre. Entre los resultados destacan:

  1. los contenidos de los periódicos examinados reproducen el discurso de las agencias de noticias estadounidenses;
  2. los tópicos reflejan un discurso sin referencia al pasado, sin reflexión sobre las causas de los acontecimientos y los responsables, táctica cuyo objetivo es minimizar las contradicciones y la identificación y los agentes de los hechos;
  3. los tópicos seleccionados son producto de opiniones, ideologías y valores que proceden de las ideologías de las elites militares, políticas, periodísticas estadounidenses
  4. la construcción de identidades se establece mediante una dicotomía: un "Yo-Nosotros", Estados Unidos-América Latina, la sociedad con valores positivos (legalidad, moderación) y un "Él-Ellos-Otro", los árabes, los afganos representantes de los valores rechazados por la sociedad (extremistas, ilegales).

Abstract


        In the framework of a critical discourse analysis as established by Van Dijk (1990, 1997, 1998), this         article analyzes the exclusion and inclusion of actions and social actors in the Latin American                 digital press in the representation of the events of September 11th in New York. The data is                 comprised of 509 selected news articles from seventeen different Latin American digital                         newspapers dated from September 12th to the 16th. Among the results, we emphasize:
  •   the contents of the newspapers that were examined reproduce the discourse of the American news agencies;
  •  the topics reflect a discourse without reference to the past or reflection on the causes of the events or the people in charge. Such tactics aim to diminish the contradictions, identification and agents of the facts;
  •  the selected topics are the product of opinions, ideologies and values that stem from the American military, political and journalistic elites;
  • the construction of identities is established by a dichotomy: "I-Us": United States- Latin America, the society with positive values (legality, moderation), and "He/She-They-Other": the Arabs, the Afghan representatives of the values rejected by the society (extremist, illegal).
