This article is concerned with the conflict between Mexico and Cuba in May, 2004, as reported in the Mexican newspapers El Universal and La Jornada. Relations between the governments of the two countries had reached a crisis point after Mexico’s conservative National Action Party (PAN) took up office in 2000. The crisis received extensive coverage in the media, who took over as the main channel of communication between the two governments after normal political and diplomatic channels were closed. The result was that the media themselves became the stage on which the conflict was played out. My approach to press discourse focuses mainly on enunciation, examining the enunciative scene displayed in the newspapers through the discourse of the various political actors involved in this event. I describe the discourse strategies of the participants as they are represented in the newspapers. The general objective of the article is to contribute to our understanding of a political conflict in the press which marked a crucial point in relations between Mexico and Cuba.
